We all get them, cravings. They show up for a variety of reasons that differ for each of us. One thing we each have in common is the area in our brain, the hypothalamus, that regulates secretion of chemicals and hormones related to stress, pleasure, pain and hunger. A neurotransmitter, dopamine, the “feel good” neurotransmitter sends messages to other nerves giving it the rewarding experience. The expectation of receiving a reward, not necessarily the reward itself, produces higher dopamine. If we eat the same foods often that give us this feel good feeling, it can cause over eating or food addictions.
Studies also indicate that cravings can be triggered by some of these factors like emotional cues, food advertisements (especially with children), stress, hormonal changes, snacking habits, or nutrient deficiencies.
Figuring out the why is the first step. Some tools to overcome them are broadly defined as:
*identify emotional triggers
*engage in activities that address emotional triggers
*practice mindfulness
*avoid highly processed foods
*avoid going long periods without eating
*incorporate balanced meals with protein and fiber
*stay hydrated
*get good sleep
Cravings can be curbed and beaten.
